Muslim Essentials

Muslim Essentials Year 2 is exclusively for graduates of Muslim Essentials Year 1 from 2023-2024. This advanced program deepens the study of the fundamental disciplines (farḍ al-‘ayn) of Islamic scholarship, building on the foundational knowledge from Year 1. It offers a comprehensive exploration of Islam’s core sciences, empowering participants to further engage with their faith and fulfill personal obligations. A prerequisite for the program is the ability to read the Quran; while fluency is not required, reading proficiency is essential to complete the compulsory Quranic Arabic subjects. 

Educational Philosophy

The course is designed to not only introduce students to the fundamentals of Islam but also enable them to understand and appreciate the foundational principles. The teaching philosophy of the Muslim Essentials course is to engage student learning in three key areas:

Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the 9-month Muslim Essentials course will have acquired

  • A broad overview of the central beliefs of Islam.
  • A contextual and practical understanding of the Prophetic biography.
  • An introduction to the historical development of Islamic jurisprudence and its legal principles and theories.
  • An introductory understanding of the science of Hadith
  • A foundational understanding of the core sciences of the Islamic tradition.
  • A deeper understanding of contemporary thought and the birth of the Modern world.
  • An understanding of contemporary issues pertaining to Islamic history and key historical moments/figures.
  • Equipping students with the expertise to apply gained insights in serving their local communities, whether as volunteers, chaplains, youth leaders, khateebs, or simply as knowledgeable and engaged members of the Muslim community. 
  • A chance to cultivate research abilities by exploring a topic of personal interest

Course Structure

  • The program is a part-time 9-month course and will be conducted on-site.
  • There are 4 terms. Terms 1,2, and 3 are 9 weeks. Term 4 is 5 weeks. Term dates mostly align with the Victorian schooling calendar.
  • Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday nights. 
  • Ramadan Timetable: Classes are held on Saturdays 10-2pm.
  • 4 periods of study per week. Each period is 70 minutes.
  • Students should expect to spend 4-6 additional study hours per week.
  • Depending on prayer times, class times will start and end anytime between 6:00-9:00 pm.  
  • The curriculum and content may be subject to change.
  • Cohort size is restricted.
