Academic Background
Born and raised in Melbourne, Döne Onan completed her Undergraduate Degree with Honours in Science at RMIT University and a PhD in medical research at Monash University.
Dr Döne was Lecturer and Course Coordinator at the University of Melbourne for the second year Science/ Biomedical Science subject Techniques in Molecular Science. She has published seven peer-reviewed journal articles, co-supervised 3 Honours students and has presented her research at many national and international conferences in the fields of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Her PhD thesis investigated the cardiac effects of the Urotensin II endocrine system in mammals and the signalling and regulatory processes involved. She continued to undertake medical research in the fields of Type II diabetes and Bone Cancer at The Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute and St Vincent’s Medical Research Institute, respectively.
In 2014 Dr Onan changed her career trajectory and started teaching at a local Islamic Secondary College taking leadership roles which included working as Vice-Principal.
She is the mother of three and an active member of the local Islamic Community where she has played the role of mentor and youth leader to young girls for many years and continues to present weekly Islamic classes.
