Academic Background

Born and raised in Melbourne, Talha’s pursuit of the Islamic Sciences began in 2010 when he travelled to Turkey to undertake a degree in Islamic theology. Since his graduation in 2015, he has spent most of his time furthering his academic journey at renowned institutions: Cambridge Muslim College, The University of Melbourne and the University of Oxford. His study of Islamic studies in Western academia was complimented by an engagement with the classical Islamic tradition with scholars from the Muslim world including Turkey, Jordan, and Yemen.


Talha’s Uni. of Oxford thesis titled The Conceptualisation of Tradition in Contemporary Islam received the Pembroke Graduate Prize Winner award where he explored the category of ‘tradition’ in the thought of two contemporary Muslim thinkers: Abdal Hakim Murad and Abdurrahman Taha.


His current interests focus on the intersection of tradition and modernity, the role of religion and religious thought in contemporary society, and Islamic pedagogy.
